Frederick Clark         1874-1967
Frederick was born on 28 October 1874, the son of George Clark and Jesse Maud Chalmers, in Sunderland, County Durham. He attended the Repton school, and from there he went into the law office of Steele, Maitland and Steele, at Sunderland, remaining in that office for two years, then put in the last three years of his studies in the law office of Maples, Teesdale and Company, Old Jury, London. He was admitted to the bar in 1899.

He then volunteered for the Boer War in South Africa, but was rejected on account of weak lungs, so he decided to take a trip around the world. He sailed from Southampton to New York, and from there crossed the continent to San Francisco, where he took a boat to Honolulu, the Samoan Islands, New Zealand, Australia, thence to Ceylon, India, Egypt, and the south of France.

He returned to England in February 1901, due to the illness of his father, who died on 4 March 1901. After settling that estate, he practiced law until the summer of 1902.
In 1902, he returned to California, and joined two old friends, Fletcher and Harry Elliott, who had a fruit ranch in the Mt. Pleasant district, of Placer County, California. After working with them for a year, he bought their ranch.

On 22 July 1911, Frederick married Miss Stella Bruce, a Chico girl, who was then teaching at the Mt. Pleasant public school.

Frederick became an American citizen in 1915, at Auburn, before Judge Prewett. He took a very real interest in education, and also in the Boy Scout movement, and also served on the board of trustees of the Lincoln High School.

They had one child, Frederick Leonard, Jr., who attended the William Warren Military Academy, at Menlo Park, California.

The marriage to Stella Bruce ended in a separation.
