James was born 16 May 1765, the son of James Goding and Susanna Thompson. James Goding first appears in the London Directories in 1804 along with Thomas Goding as wine and brandy merchants and later also brewers in Knightsbridge, where they continued to operate until 1823. In 1824 the firm of Goding and Broadwood Brewers was established and continued to operate at 50 Broad Street until 1838. A number of beers were produced including fine ale, table ale and table beer, strong and amber beer. On the inside cover of the twenty eight page account book is a appeal that "You are requested not pay the Men for laying down Ale" (a request not to tip the delivery men). |
In 1839 the Lion Brewery name transferred to James and Charles Goding, Lion Brewery, Belvedere Road, Lambeth. Brewing was continued at 50 Broad Street by a new firm of Broadwood Mundell and Co from 1840 to 1848. In 1850 Edward Huggins and Co brewers are first listed at 50 Broad Street. This firm continued to operate on the site under different names (Huggins and Co brewers, John Huggins and Co brewers, Huggins and Company Limited) until 1929. Indeed early in the twentieth century the site of the brewery was expanded to include numbers 46-52 Broad Street.
James never married. He took in Elizabeth, the daughter of his brother George, after both George and his wife died. Elizabeth was born with mental problems. |

The Will of the late Mr. James Goding His executors are his nephews James, William, and Charles Goding, who have sworn the personal property for probate duty under £120,000; ; This is entirely exclusive of the freehold, which is very considerable. He directs his executors to invest the sum of £35,000, and to apply the interest and dividends for the support of his niece, Elizabeth Goding, whom he had adopted and who resided with him, and from her being afflicted with delusion of mind, she has been the object of his tenderest regard and solicitude. He has expressed himself most anxious that she should continue to dwell in the house in St. George's-place, Hanover-square, and that nothing should be disturbed or removed therefrom whilst she is still living, and he entreats his nephew William, in whom he reposes the greatest reliance, to fulfil his wishes, and that, together with his nieces, he will often visit her and see to her comforts; and that she is treated with tenderness and kindness, and at her death he desires she should be buried in the vault with him at the cemetery, Kensal-green. |
To Dr. Fuller, of Piccadilly, he leaves a legacy of £200. To St, George's Hospital, Knightsbridge, £200. To his nephews, William, Henry, and Charles Goding, he leaves his licensed houses, as specified in his will, as well as other property, freehold and leasehold. To his nephews James and Thomas Goding £5,000 each; liberal legacies to his other nephews and nieces, and others of his family and friends. Legacies also to his servants, and two of them he has left the interest of £1,000 each for life. The £35,000, on the death of his niece, is to be divided into five parts of £7,000 each, for his nieces Margaret and Susanna and nephews William, Henry, and Charles Goding, whom he had appointed one of his executors, and had left to him several houses, died in the lifetime of the testator. The residuary legatees, both of his real and personal estate, are his nephews William and Charles Goding. The will, with a codicil, was made in 1841. The deceased died on the 20th ult., in his 81st year. - Morning Post. |
