John was born on 28 September 1826, the son of John Long and Hannah Marie Scholey, at Wickersburgh, Yorkshire.   He was an Elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.   He became a personal clerk for Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He appeared to have other wives also: Lydia East, Sarah Ann Burbage, Eleanor Oates, and Sophia Badger. Betsy Sanders                                                         1834-1892 Betsy was born on 25 September 1834, the daughter of Simeon Sanders and Frances Waterman, at Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire.   She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about 1852.   She emigrated to Utah in 1861, crossing the plains in an ox team, and enduring many hardships.   She married John Varah Long in 1862, and shortly after his death in 1869, opened a small millinery and art store in Salt Lake City.
