COLONEL H. V. COWAN
  The death occurred at his residence, Ford House, Bideford, yesterday, at the age of 64, of Colonel Henry Vivian Cowan, C.V.O., C.B., late A.A.G. Irish Command, who was Military Secretary to Lord Roberts during the South African War.
  Colonel Cowan, who was the son of the late Richard Cowan, of St. Kilda, Sidmouth, was educated at Winchester, and entered the Royal Artillery in 1873, being promoted Captain and brevit major in 1882, Major in 1890. Lieutenant Colonel in 1899, and Colonel in 1901.   He retired in 1911.
  He served during the Afghan War 1878 - 1880 as A.D.C.,
being present at the action of Charasiah, and with the Egyptian Expedition 1882, taking part in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir, in which he was severely wounded.   In the South African War he was present at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, and other actions.   He became Assistant Military Secretary to the General Commanding the forces in Ireland, and in 1904 was appointed Commandant, Royal Military Academy.
  He was A.D.C. to the King from 1904 to 1911, and from 1914 to last year held the post of A.A.G., Irish Command.   He received the C.V.O. in 1904, and the C.B. in 1908.
  Colonel Cowan married in 1894, Mabel Talbot, daughter of the late Sir James Laing, of Etal Manor, Northumberland.

Marylebone Crematorium, at 2 p.m., on Tuesday March 31st.   Family flowers only to William Nodes, 53 St. John's Wood High Street. N.W.8.
