David was born in 1840, the son of Samuel Westgate and Anne Elizabeth Bowles, at Shelton, Norfolk. He is named as the father of Mary Westgate, born in 1866, by a Mary West. There does not appear to be a record of a marriage with a Mary Ann West, though there are many girls by that name in the area at that time.

The record of the birth of Mary, says she was born in 1866, the daughter of David Westgate and Mary Ann West, at Hempnall, Norfolk.. This is a difficult story to sort out. What we have is the James Mickleburg family, that had a daughter Mary Anne, born in 1839, and baptized in Pulham, Norfolk, on 15 Nov 1839. About the same age as David Westgate. Did she have an encounter with David Westgate, to produce the "Grandchild" Mary Westgate? Or were the Mickleburg's just good people who took in an unwanted baby, produced by David Westlake and a girl named Mary Ann West?
