LORD ELPHINSTONE
    Lord Elphinstone, K.T., Captain-General of the Royal Company of Archers from 1935 to 1953 and an uncle of the Queen, died yesterday at his home, Carberry Tower, Musselburgh, at the age of 86.
  The Right Hon. Sidney Herbert Buller-Fullerton-Elphinstone, sixteenth Lord Elphinstone in the Peerage of Scotland and second Baron Elphinstone of Elphinstone in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, K. T., was born on July 27, 1869, at the family seat, Carberry Tower, Musselburgh.   He was the second son of the fifteenth Lord Elphinstone, by Constance Euphemia Woronzow, daughter of the sixth Earl of Dunmore.   Between the death of his elder brother in 1890 and January 18, 1893, when he suceedeed to the peerage, he was styled Master of Elphinstone.   He was educated at Marlborough.
  Lord Elphinstone was appointed an ensign in the Royal Company  of Archers  (The  king's  bodyguard  for  Scotland),
Lieutenant in 1919 and Captain in 1923 and was also vice-president of the council to that body.   In 1923-24 he served as Lord High Commissioner to the assembly of the Church of Scotland.   He was formerly a director of the Bank of Scotland, of which he was appointed Governor in 1924.   He was also a Trustee and commissioner of the Board of Manufacturers for Scotland.   In 1930 he was appointed Vice-Lieutenant of the County of Midlothian.   Lord Elphinstone was appointed a Knight of the Thistle in 1927.   He married on July 14, 1910, Lady Mary Frances Bowes-Lyon, second daughter of the fourteenth Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, K. T., and an elder sister of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.   There were two sons and two daughters of the marriage.   He is succeeded in the peerage by John Alexander, Master of Elphinstone, who was born on March 22, 1914, was educated at Eton, and was taken prisoner while serving with the Black Watch during the last war.

    Lady Elphinstone, D.C.V.O., widow of the 16th Baron Elphinstone, K.T., died yesterday at Carberry Tower, Musselburgh, at the age of 77.   She was Lady Mary Frances Bowes-Lyon, second daughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and an elder sister of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.   She was married in 1910 and her husband died in 1955.
